Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
There is a lot of subtext in “Icarus Rising” and much more in “Icarus Ascendant” I would hope that readers would grasp the symbolism below the surface, but I’m not going to spoil anyone’s enjoyment by blatantly spelling it out. I’d be much more interested in asking readers what they thought the message was, what allegories they found in reading, and what subversive elements they caught.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Buy all my books as they come out!!! On a more serious note, I wrote this book from my heart and for the reader. I hope the two have meshed well enough that this little book of mine will be well received and liked, perhaps even loved. I fell in love with Brandon and Rachel as I typed away, fleshing them out, exploring them and learning about them. I cried when I hurt them and I rejoiced when things went their way.
Rachel and Brandon came very much alive for me as their story unfolded and to the readers I say, I hope you’ll feel the same way. I hope you will love them and clamour for more.
What are your goals as a writer?
The rumour is that traditional publishing is dead, but I would still like to see my book in a bookstore after I sign a multi-million dollar deal.
I would also like to go on a whirlwind world book tour, but that seems pretty unlikely as well. Maybe a whirlwind book tour of Western and Central Canada is a more realistic goal. Or a card table set up just outside my local bookstore with my name written prominently in magic marker on bristol board an even more attainable goal.
Do you have any advice for writers?
The only reason to write is because you love writing. If you don’t love writing you should probably stop. Writing is not easy, nor should it be easy, but if you love writing there is nothing more rewarding than writing that last word of the book, or the first word of a new book.
Or in the case of writing erotic romance I have found there is no greater joy than the rapture I feel when I find yet another way to say the word “penis”
I think if you are a writer you know what it feels like to read a sentence four or five times knowing there is something missing, then finding that perfect word, that word that perfectly captures the thought you were trying to express. That moment of revelation, finding that exact word, that is writing, that is the reward of writing.
You have to love writing. Any advice for writers? If you don’t love it… stop!
What do you think is the future of reading/writing?
The answer to this question frightens me. I believe that writers will always write, a purging of the stories in our heads must be done; there is no other cure for this strange malaise we suffer from. However, I fear that readers are already an endangered species. I currently attend college after quite a long break. When talking to my fellow classmates who are twenty years my junior, they claim to have no time to read, that they don’t want to make the time, or perhaps time will magically appear once they’re finished with school.
What does it say about a society where first independent bookstores and now even large corporate chain bookstores cannot keep their doors open? The future of books and reading is quite worrisome to me.

Icarus Rising is the first of a trilogy, but it stands as a novel by itself.
