Author Interview - Samantha Warren @_samanthawarren

What scares you the most? Failure. And success. I want to be a successful writer, but at the same time, it scares the bejeebus out of me.

What makes you happiest? Coffee. And laying in the hammock reading a really good book on a nice day with a light breeze.

What’s your greatest character strength? I’m loyal and I’m strong when I need to be. Plus I’m very independent.

What’s your weakest character trait? I don’t trust myself. I have a bad habit of always assuming everyone knows more than I do.

Why do you write? I have to. I’ve tried to give up before. I’ve actually said “After I finish this book, I quit.” But before I finish with that one, three more story ideas have popped into my head and started nagging me to be written. If I don’t write them, they sit there and pester me until I sit down at the keyboard and let them come out.

The Iron Locket

She was raised to hunt faeries. He was raised from the dead.

***

Aiofe Callaghan comes from a long line of faery hunters. Hired by one of the faery queens, they protect the human world from chaos and destruction. But when Aiofe stumbles through an open door into the land of Faery, she discovers the job isn’t as simple as it seems, and neither is she.

Arthur Pendragon spent centuries in blissful nothingness, until the day the four queens banded together to raise him from the dead. Along with his twelve most talented knights, he leads the warring armies of Faery against the greatest enemy they have ever known: one of their own.

Can they overcome their differences to confront the greatest challenges either of them have ever faced?

Author Interview - Jennifer Cornet @J_Cornet

Image of Jennifer Cornet

What makes you angry?

-Lots of stupid things make me mad. I’m from the DC area so traffic is a way of life. But there is something about someone going the speed limit in the fast lane when there isn’t traffic that makes my blood boil. That and movies that are way too long. 90 minutes, that’s all you need to tell a good story.

Are you a city slicker or a country lover?

-Neither. I enjoy both, which is why I love the DC area. I’m just outside the city (on the Virginia side), but also less than an hour from good hiking trails. It’s a little of everything.

How do you think people perceive writers?

-Depends on the writer. If they are remotely good, people tend to be amazed that they could come up with a complete complex story. If they are not so good, people think maybe a screw has come loose somewhere.

What’s your next project?

-I’m currently working on books 2 and 3 of the Elements of Ink series. At the same time, I’m developing a music based series that will have nothing to do with fantasy or sci-fi, so that will be a major change for me. I’m looking forward to working on a bit of everything.

What’s the reason for your life? Have you figured out your reason for being here yet?

-I think that’s a bold question. I feel it’s more important to live a life that make you happy and that you feel proud of rather than define it with a reason or purpose.

OrderOfEarth

For Onyx Bay, what started as a cathartic ink session takes an unexpected turn when a specialized blood test at the tattoo parlor reveals her true identity, which threatens to turn her entire world upside down.

When Onyx learns that she is the descendant of a fantastical race of creatures who control the global elements, she discovers that her own blood makes her a valuable prize for competing forces, known as the Orders. As the truth about her bloodline spreads, she finds herself at the center of a supernatural bounty hunt pursued by both human and creature members of the Orders willing to do anything to claim her as their own. The hunt intensifies when a prophet foresees she will tip the balance of power and upset the peace among the Orders. As she attempts to evade capture and survive, Onyx is forced to choose between her humanistic past and a supernatural destiny in order to take control of her own future.

#Author Ben Woodard on Social Media, Writing & Relaxing @benswoodard #AmWriting

Image of Ben Woodard

Have you started another book yet?
Yes, and it’s a middle grade novelette. The working title is Whispers Of Trees and the story is set in present day Ireland. A visiting American boy is lost in an ancient forest and the boy’s older brother meets a strange woman who claims to know how to find the brother. But how does she know this? Is she a witch? Find out in January.

What are your current writing projects now?
I’m working on a middle grade paranormal trilogy that has sparked interest from a couple of agents. I intend to query the first book hoping for a traditional publishing contract. If after a set period of time, there is no interest, I will self publish the book.

How do you write, with a laptop, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?

All of the above, and more. When I’m writing a draft, I usually dictate using Dragon Dictate for the Mac. I’m a decent storyteller and this is the quickest way for me to get the words out. However, when editing I use a Mac Mini with a large screen monitor. Don’t tell, but sometimes when editing or writing, I will get in the tub with a couple of dark beers, a pad of paper, and a pencil and stay until my wife threatens to call the fire department to get me out.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?
I like to read, to hike in the woods, to play with the grandkids, and snuggle with my wife on the couch. Oh, and not necessarily in that order.

How often do you write? And when do you write?
I write, market, and/or edit every day. Since I’m semiretired—I don’t have to go to work every day—I’m fortunate to be able to spend from eight to twelve hours a day on my books. And that doesn’t seem to be enough time.

Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?
Tons of them. Two multi-published children’s authors in my city have mentored me. One edits my drafts and urges me to learn more about plotting and story arcs. I get incredible support from traditional and indie authors alike on social networking. I can’t believe that there is any other profession where competitors spend so much time helping one another.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?
Since I writing for teens, I hope they will get a sense of adventure and fun. There are lessons in the books, but the main reason I wrote them was to spark interest in reading from kids that don’t like to read.

How do you feel about social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter? Are they a good thing?
For authors, they are an excellent resource—both for marketing and finding writing information. And, as a plus, they’re fun, but all of us need to be careful because they can suck away our writing time. I set limits on the time spent networking and even use a timer because I can’t be trusted when looking at animal videos on Facebook.
What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?
Social networking is probably the best tool. Not just for getting your name out, but to learn writing techniques and to keep up with publishing. Blogs, too, are another great resource. The amount of writing information that is available on the internet is simply amazing and a perfect place to start if you’re a new writer.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?
To me success would be when reluctant readers, and especially boys, read and enjoy my books. I’ve had one boy who, according to his mother, is bored with reading. She got him to read Hunger Games and the Percy Jackson books, but he’s a slow reader and lost interest. But with tears in her eyes, she told me that when he read my book, A Stairway To Danger, he wouldn’t put it down and even hid under the covers reading late into the night. That’s my definition of success.

Do you have any advice for writers?
Sure. Write. That’s it, that’s the number one thing all of us must do. No excuses, no doubts, and no quitting. Because to get better, there is only one way, and that is to keep putting words on paper until we’re good at it. For some of us this might take years, but we really have no choice.

Do you have any specific last thoughts that you want to say to your readers?
My main reason for deciding to publish my stories is to encourage reluctant readers, especially boys, to read. Reading was my salvation as a teen. When I wanted to fight, scream, or run, I would grab a book and mange to stay out of trouble. My greatest hope is that my books will cause a child or teen to develop a love of reading.

StepIntoDarkness

Explosions, sabotage, caves, deadly warnings and a dangerous red-haired man.

Imagine The Hardy Boys meet Tom Sawyer. Add a layer of teen angst and excitement plus a mysterious group trying to stop a new dam while stirring up racial tensions.

That’s STEPS INTO DARKNESS, the next book in the Shakertown Adventure Series by Ben Woodard.

Fourteen-year-old Tom Wallace again makes plans to escape the small town in the 1923 Kentucky countryside. The town that won’t let him forget his past, when a horrific event changes his mind. He teams with his cousin Will and young FBI agent Rick Sweeney to try to solve a perplexing mystery. Attempts on the boys’ lives and a bewildering list of suspects keep them on edge and confused. An old man gives them a clue that leads to a false accusation and embarrassment until they discover the real villain, and then wish they hadn’t.

STEPS INTO DARKNESS is a fun, page-turning thriller with a hint of romance that delivers adventure and mystery while exploring the fears of a teen living with a frightful memory.

#YA #Author Peter Clenott Opens Up About Family @PeterClenott #AmReading

Image of Peter Clenott

What writing are you most proud of?
It is hard to choose one child over another. I suppose if I were asked to choose the one I thought most worthy of a Nobel Prize for literature I would have to go with GOSPEL OF HANNANIAH, the story of Jesus’s illegitimate daughter. It is the Greatest Story Ever Told meets Dickens.

When you are not writing, how do you relax? My son Stephen and I climb small mountains. My kids keep my quite busy. I visit family in Maine, enjoy the local Boston sports teams, and like the occasional movie. Recently I enjoyed LINCOLN and LES MISERABLES. I would travel more, but have to be frugal until I hit the best seller list.

How often do you write? And when do you write?

Right now I am busy promoting, so don’t do any writing. When I am writing, I try to maintain a rigid schedule. If a novel is going to be about 400 typed pages, I try to sustain a goal of five pages a day. This means I finish the novel in under two months. So far, I have been able to maintain that regimen. I write when I can. Early morning is best. Afternoon is worst.

Do you intend to make writing a career?
I wish. It has been, of sorts, but I would have to say it is like working for a non-profit.

What do you consider the most challenging thing about writing a novel or about writing in general?

I may have touch of ADHD myself, so I need to have a semblance of order before I begin to write. This means a thorough outline so I know from Point A to Point z where I’m going. (Though I often take unexpected detours) The actual writing generally flows quite well when I have a good outline to work from.

What cause are you most passionate about and why?
Many things, but my latest two novels have dealt with environmental issues and global warming. Even if you don’t believe in global warming, how can you as a parent or grandparent take the risk and do nothing? The economy is another big issue, the growing disparity between the rich and poor. It is greed that makes the bottom line more important than the life of our planet.

In the last year have you learned or improved on any skills?
I’m probably better at self-editing. In the past I have paid a professional editor to review my finished product. Financial constraints have forced me to take on the role of editor as well as writer.

Do you have any rituals you follow when finishing a piece of work?
I sacrifice a more successful writer to the literary gods hoping that with less competition I’ll have a better shot at recognition.

Who has influenced you throughout your career as a writer?
I can’t say that anyone has particularly influenced my writing. My mother has been a constant support when the writing just didn’t seem to be going anywhere.

What is the most important thing in your life right now?
My children. My twin sons are autistic and will need parental support as long as it can be given.

Who do you admire?
My mother, 90 and going strong. She has been extremely supportive of me and my own family.
Could you please tell us a little about your book?
DEVOLUTION features 16-year-old Chiku Flynn. Chiku was born in the Congolese rainforest to two anthropologists studying the local chimpanzee population. For the first eleven years of her life, Chiku sleeps, feeds and swings through the trees with the chimpanzees of the Maiku National Park. When her mother dies, pulled into the Mamba River by a crocodile, Chiku is sent back to the United States where she becomes a maladjusted teenager diagnosed with depression, anxiety, mood disorder and is medicated for the lot. Her father’s disappearance forces a return to the jungle where Chiku finally finds her true self among the chimpanzees with whom she can communicate using sign language. In Swahili Chiku means ‘chatterbox’. The chimpanzees of the Maiku National Forest know her simply as Talk Talk.

What do you feel people will take away from your writing?
How will your words make them feel? I have always felt that a good book entertains, but a very good book does more. It teaches. It uplifts. It leaves you wanting more. It’s not a summer at the beach book that passes the time. It is something that stays with you when you go to bed that night and for weeks thereafter. I hope people will learn something in a subtle way as they read my books. In DEVOLUTION, while they are enjoying the exploits of Chiku Flynn, I hope they will learn something about chimpanzees and about the rainforest and the Congo. My novels should stir debate and start conversations going and they should make the reader feel good. I hate unhappy endings.

Devolution

What does it truly mean to be ‘Human’?

Chiku Flynn wasn’t raised to be human. Born in the Congolese rainforest, she spends her first eleven years as part of an experiment. For her, the aboriginal—the primitive—is ‘normal.’

Just after her eleventh birthday, Chiku witnesses the horrifying death of her mother, and her father sends her ‘home’ to the United States, to a normal teenager’s life. But she can’t adapt. She is the proverbial wild child—obstinate and defiant.

When her father disappears, sixteen-year-old Chiku heads back to the primordial jungle, where she uncovers her own dark past and puts to use her greatest skill: she can communicate via sign language with the wild chimpanzees of Chimp Island.

But there is turmoil in the rainforest—civil war, environmental upheaval…and murder. The lives of the chimps and the safety of the people she loves depend upon one teenaged girl who refuses to be messed with—Chiku Flynn.

Editorial reviews:
“Peter Clenott’s story of a troubled teen searching for her father in the African jungle skillfully combines the breakneck pace of a thriller with the emotional tug of a coming of age novel while providing a fascinating glimpse into the relationship between people and chimpanzees that will leave readers questioning which species is more humane. A thought-provoking read.” —Tasha Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of Behind the Shattered Glass

“Devolution is an enthralling, action-packed and fast-paced jungle thriller from beginning to end. The story is set in modern day Africa and is centered on the book’s heroine, Chiku, a firecracker of a girl full of energy and spirit. She can also talk to chimpanzees! The backdrops to the story are as old as time itself—war, racism, hunger and greed. Can a strong-willed sixteen-year-old girl and a band of chimpanzees survive in war-torn Africa? Or will death find its way into this strange yet wonderful family! This book is an interesting coming of age tale full of intrigue, wonder, romance and danger. A truly exciting and original read! This is not your grandparent’s Tarzan tale!” —Christopher P. Obert, founder of the New England Authors Expo

“If it takes a bipolar teenager and some chimpanzees to save their piece of the Congo, then Chiku and her primate friends are the ones to do it. Label them superheroes. Peter Clenott has captured diverse characters in a vibrant setting and added snappy dialogue for this unique and interesting novel.” —Shirley Ann Howard, author of the Tales series

Author Interview – Jade Kerrion @JadeKerrion

How often do you write? And when do you write?

I try to write every day, usually in the early morning or late at night (since I do have a full-time job.)

Do you have an organized process or tips for writing well? Do you have a writing schedule?

I’ve tried working to a detailed outline, which I’ve found incredibly valuable, but most of the time, I usually just work toward a vision of several key scenes that need to be in the novel, filling it out along the way. The key, I think, is being conscientious enough to finish the first draft. Once you have the first draft, warts and all, you can edit your way into a polished gem, but you have to have the first draft.

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going?

I’ve often asked myself whether this whole book-writing this is worth it. My husband, I think, had the best response of all. “What else were you planning to do with your time?” He knows me. He knows I’ve been writing since before I met him. He urges me to have patience. After all, I’ve only been published for a year and a half, and it sometimes takes people years to become an overnight success.

Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?

Absolutely. I’ve met many other authors online. In addition to moral support, I’ve received lots of publishing and marketing tips that have helped me reduce the time needed to learn the ropes.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?

I hope that readers will be different for having touched, however briefly, my fictional worlds, that their worldviews are expanded, their empathy for others is deeper, and they’ve emerged a better person.

Eternal Night ebook

Alone for a millennium, since a human murdered her beloved consort, Ashra, the immortal icrathari queen, rules over Aeternae Noctis, the domed city of eternal night. Her loneliness appears to be at an end when her consort’s soul is reborn in a human, Jaden Hunter, but their reunion will not be easy.

Icrathari are born, not made. If Ashra infuses Jaden with her immortal blood, he will be a vampire, a lesser creature of the night, a blood-drinker rather than a soul-drinker.

Furthermore, Jaden is sworn to protect his half-sister, five-year-old Khiarra. She is the child of prophecy, destined to end the eternal night and the dominion of the Night Terrors—the icrathari and the vampires.

As Ashra struggles to sustain her crumbling kingdom in the face of enemies without and treachery within, Jaden fights to defend his sister and unravel a greater mystery: what is the city of eternal night, and how did it come to be?

Getting to Know #Thriller #Author Interview Brian Bloom @BrianB_Aust

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge and thank you their support?
12 years ago, I was introduced to Steve Kurtz by a mutual friend. Steve has a deep interest in philosophical matters and was once an associate member of the Club of Rome, a global think tank. He reads voraciously and copies me with articles that he thinks might be of interest. We have a mutual interest in population overshoot, resource depletion, energy, ethics and various other matters that will likely impact on the future of civilisation. There’s a lot we don’t agree on but that is an advantage from my perspective because Steve forces me to be absolutely clear in my thinking.

5 years ago, arising from one of my blogs that I had been writing since 2002, I was contacted by a reader, Anselmo Pedroni with whom I formed a friendly relationship based on an exchange of views in our various fields of expertise. Within his field of expertise Anselmo was a world renowned physicist, Geo- and Cosmo-chemist but he had to retire for health reasons. He has been mentoring me on the science that underlies climate change and energy and various other physics based subjects in my novels. I would like to thank both Steve and Anselmo, and also my wife Denise, who has been extremely supportive of me as an individual, and who has educated me in matters spiritual for over 40 years.

Have you developed a specific writing style?
The editor/publisher of my first novel advised me to stay away from “purple prose” and to avoid becoming too caught up by adjectives – unless it was patently appropriate to the scene I was describing. She also advised me to talk in active language rather than passive language – so that the reader would not be bored to death by rambling passages. The active language typically flows in dialogue and the passive language typically flows from descriptive puffery.

I have tried to follow that advice. I have also discovered that readers can follow more than one thought thread at a time, provided the thoughts are seen within context. For example, the mystery stories that dump random ideas, the relevance of which only emerges a couple of chapters later, forces the reader to concentrate very carefully. My books already require concentration, so I try to have some mercy. I try to lighten the boredom by using different techniques than “tension building”. For example, switching from one scene to another; using humour, using dialogue for as long as it feels comfortable and then switching to descriptive prose, presenting a part of an idea to stimulate curiosity, which encourages the reader to read on in order to get the balance of the idea.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?
I have what the Harvard University Business School guys call a BHAG – a “Big, Hairy, Audacious, Goal”. My BHAG is to reach 140 million readers/movie viewers across the planet – which represents 2% of the global population. To put some perspective on how B that HAG is, Michael Crichton’s books, cumulatively, sold 100 million copies across his entire career; Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code sold about 80 million copies, and Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ had about 60 million viewers.

My target market is those same readers/viewers, but augmented by similarly minded people in The Middle East, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Russia, India and China. “Success” will be defined as realising my BHAG. Anything substantially less, and I may as well play golf. I’m not holding my breath.

On the other hand, I am giving it my best shot. Following a 35 year career in Strategic Planning, at senior level both inside large corporations and for small, high growth businesses, I devoted nearly 8 years of my life to researching and writing those books. They represent the best I was able to produce. From my perspective I have nothing to be ashamed of. My novels capture the essence of life on earth in the early 21st Century and in that sense they can be genuinely classified as “literature”. Hopefully they may one day be seen as classical literature.

I would also like to emphasise one fact: “Success” will not feed my ego. I wrote Beyond Neanderthal and The Last Finesse because I could, and because I perceived a crying need on society’s part. I am genuinely worried about the future for all our children and grandchildren. If your readers are as worried as I am, then – for their own sakes – they should read my books and start talking amongst their circles of friends and acquaintances. Let’s move to heal society and our planet. My success will be everyone’s success. As an aside, if we are successful then it will prove that the pen is indeed “mightier than the sword”.

What dreams have been realised as a result of your writing
None, I am not by nature a dreamer. I try to be a visionary. Will my vision be realised? The market will decide if they want to hear what I have to say. But the market needs to become aware of the fact that I have something to say.

Do you have any upcoming appearances that you would like to share with us?
In respect of writing, no. However, I did score a hole-in-one for the first time after 50 years of playing golf on and off, and I will be appearing at my local golf club to receive a trophy.

The Last Finesse

In the global corridors of power, a group of faceless men is positioning to usurp control of one of the world’s primary energy resources: uranium. Climate change looms large. Luke Sinclair is a young, Australian-born professor of mineralogy and an expert in the nuclear-fuel cycle. Up to now, he’s led a carefree, hedonistic lifestyle.

But things change: renegade North Korea is about to transfer its illicitly acquired nuclear-weapons technology to Myanmar. The CIA wants to block the development. It enlists the aid of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service. ASIS commandeers Luke, who quickly discovers there are wheels within wheels. Who has the real power? Who are his real friends? Is the attempt to corner the nuclear market ‘The last finesse’ of the faceless men who are so fixated on their personal goals they’ll risk a planetary cataclysm? Has ethical behaviour become merely an anachronism in the 21st Century gladiatorial arena?

The Last Finesse is Brian’s second factional novel. Both were written for the simultaneous entertainment and invigoration of the thinking element of society. It is a prequel to Beyond Neanderthal, which takes a visionary view of humanity’s future, provided we can sublimate our Neanderthal drive to entrench pecking orders in society. The Last Finesse is more “now” oriented. Together, these two books reflect a holistic, right brain/left brain view of the challenges faced by humanity; and how we might meet them. All our problems – including the mountain of debt that casts its shadow over the world’s wallowing economy – are soluble.

About the Author:
In 1987, Brian and his young family migrated from South Africa to Australia where he was employed in Citicorp’s Venture Capital division. He was expecting that Natural Gas would become the world’s next energy paradigm but, surprisingly, it was slow in coming. He then became conscious of the raw power of self-serving vested interests to trump what – from an ethical perspective – should have been society’s greater interests.

Eventually, in 2005, with encouragement from his long suffering wife, Denise, he decided to do something about what he was witnessing: Beyond Neanderthal was the result; The Last Finesse is the prequel.

Author Interview – Michelle Rabe @michrabe

Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?

Yes. It taught me a lot about the basics of writing. The earliest drafts had very little in common with the finished novel. The basic storyline and characters were the same but a lot of happy accidents happened along the way that made the story better.

Do you intend to make writing a career?

Yes.

Have you developed a specific writing style?

I think that I have, what it is I can’t really say.

What is your greatest strength as a writer?

I think that it’s my dialogue. I spent several years studying acting and I think that it helped develop my ear for dialogue whether the words are on paper or actually being spoken.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

Yes. I do another creative thing, dancing badly in my living room where no one else can see, taking my camera out and photographing nature or a cemetery. Something, which gives me distance from what’s causing the problem.

Michelle Rabe

Author Interview – Merry Farmer @merryfarmer20

Image of Merry Farmer

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going?  Simply the fact that I love writing so much I couldn’t imagine not writing.  It’s in my blood and my soul.  Yes, it gets hard sometimes, but the joy of the story is what pulls me through.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?  I really hope that people will be entertained by my books, that they will be carried away into a fun story that has them turning pages.  But as my writing matures, I’m also finding myself thinking a lot about how I can hit on common emotions, thinks that we have all experienced but may be having a hard time with, like bullying, loss, and starting a new life.

What’s your favorite meal?  I’m a big fan of healthy foods these days.  My favorite meal that I cook for myself is salmon with pesto, Brussels sprouts sautéed in olive oil with turmeric, and butternut squash ravioli.  Yum!

What color represents your personality the most?  Red.  It’s bright, fun, and has a lot of connotations. *wiggles eyebrows*

What movie do you love to watch?  I’m a big fan of Bollywood movies, actually.  I have a Christmas tradition of watching the Bollywood movie Devdas every Christmas.  It’s very possibly the most beautiful and most depressing movie I’ve ever seen, so of course it’s a natural for Christmas Day.

FoolForLove

Birth of an Assassin by Rik Stone @stone_rik

Image of Rik Stone

Are there books you really don’t enjoy?

I hate a slow pace and while description is as necessary as any other part of your story, too much of it is a killer. If my thoughts say ‘for goodness sake get on with it, it’s time to put it aside, I then hate it all the more because I can’t put it aside, if I start reading a book, I finish it. I know, stupid.

If you could study any subject at university, what would you pick?

I studied the sciences because I saw the chance of a better future. If money hadn’t been an issue, I would have chosen something akin to literature.

How do you work through self-doubt and fear?

I ignore it for the purpose of work, but it never goes away so I guess I live with it.

What is your greatest character strength?

I lose the plot occasionally, but I am focused and determined by nature so I don’t stay down for long.

What is your weakest character trait?

I suffer from being oversensitive… big time!

Birth of an Assassin

Set against the backdrop of Soviet, post-war Russia, Birth of an Assassin follows the transformation of Jez Kornfeld from wide-eyed recruit to avenging outlaw. Amidst a murky underworld of flesh-trafficking, prostitution and institutionalized corruption, the elite Jewish soldier is thrown into a world where nothing is what it seems, nobody can be trusted, and everything can be violently torn from him.

Author Interview – Kim Cresswell @kimcresswell

Image of Kim Cresswell

Do you have any pets?

I have a 13 year old cocker spaniel. He’s a sweetheart. I’ve had Luke since he was 5 1/2 weeks old. He has quite the personality and is a huge cuddle-bug.

Do you have children?

I have two adult children. My daughter is 34 and my son is 28. I also have two amazing grandsons.

Have your books won any awards?

LETHAL JOURNEY was a finalist in From the Heart Romance Writers (FTHRW) Golden Gate Contest (2003). REFLECTION, my debut romantic thriller has won numerous awards:  Indie Book of the Day Award (November 26, 2013), UP Authors Fiction Challenge Winner (2013), Silicon Valley’s Romance Writers of America (RWA) “Gotcha!” Romantic Suspense Winner (2004) and an Honourable Mention in Calgary’s (RWA) The Writer’s Voice Contest (2006).

Why do you think what you do matters?

Being an author does matter. I’m a huge supporter of freedom of speech. I also try to use some type of controversial topic in all my books. Human cloning (REFLECTION) is one of them and has caused lots of debate over the years. It gets people talking.

What book would you recommend that everyone should read?

Waiting Wives: The Story of Schilling Manor, Home Front to the Vietnam War by Donna Moreau. “In 1964, as the first B-52s took flight in what would become America’s longest combat mission, an old Air Force base on the plains of Kansas became Schilling Manor — the only base ever to be set aside for the wives and children of soldiers assigned to Vietnam.” An incredible story about strength and love!

Lethal Journey333x500

A killer lurks in the shadows of Hyde Park, New York…waiting.

Manhattan District Attorney, Lauren Taylor, is about to take on the most important case of her career, prosecuting Gino Valdina, acting mob boss of New York’s most influential crime syndicate.

For three decades, Gino Valdina has led New York’s Valdina crime family. Since his recent indictment for murder, the leadership of the family is in turmoil, appalled by the death of one of their own, Gino’s wife, Madelina. Without the support of the family behind him, Valdina will do anything to save himself.

But Lauren soon discovers, things aren’t always as they seem when she’s tossed into a mystery, a deadly conspiracy that reaches far beyond the criminal underworld and a journey into the past makes her a target…and anyone she’s ever loved.

Author Interview – Shanna Hatfield @ShannaHatfield #thechristmascowboy

Image of Shanna Hatfield

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

Definitely romance. It would be a tie between contemporary and historical. I’ve written one suspense novel. I have to be in a really dark place to write about killers and nasty characters, and much prefer the sparkly pink world in my head where the romances blossom.

What made you want to be a writer?

A mixture of wanting to express my thoughts through written word and entertaining others through my stories.

What is your greatest strength as a writer?

I’d say it’s probably character development. I want my characters to seem so real, a reader finishes a book feeling like they’ve made a new friend.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it?

Absolutely. Keep writing. Depending on how bad it is, I might write something ridiculous that I know will never see the light of day. I might work on writing some blogs. I might skip ahead and write a chapter further into the book than where I’m working now. The key to overcoming writer’s block is to keep writing. You might have to delete everything you write and start over, but eventually you’ll get past the block and back on track.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

My current release is The Christmas Cowboy. It’s the story of Tate Morgan, a saddle bronc rider, and Kenzie Beckett, a corporate trainer for a direct sales company. At first glance, the only thing the two of them seem to have in common is that they both travel frequently. They meet in an airport and the attraction between them is immediate, although Kenzie has no intention of getting involved with a rodeo cowboy.

The Christmas Cowboy

"10% of the net proceeds from all my book sales December 1-24 will be donated to the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund®"

Flying from city to city in her job as a busy corporate trainer for a successful direct sales company, Kenzie Beckett doesn’t have time for a man. And most certainly not for the handsome cowboy she keeps running into at the airport. Burned twice, she doesn’t trust anyone wearing boots and Wranglers, especially someone as charming and handsome as Tate Morgan.

Among the top saddle bronc riders in the rodeo circuit, easy-going Tate Morgan can handle the toughest horse out there, but trying to deal with the beautiful Kenzie Beckett is a completely different story.

As the holiday season approaches, this Christmas Cowboy is going to need to pull out all the stops if he wants a chance at winning her heart.

Author Interview – AFN Clarke @AFNClarke

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/c0/b7/cf83062a046e0ac1d1884d.L._V146042287_.jpg
Have you ever thought any of your books would make great movies?
Absolutely.  Readers have consistently commented on my cinematic writing style, that draws them into the action and makes them part of what’s happening.  And I’ve been a screenwriter, so maybe that explains it.  My first book CONTACT was made into an award-winning BBCTV film.  I have written a screenplay of Dry Tortugas which is a drama about a father-daughter relationship and which has garnered some recent interest.  But I think I’ve had the most feedback on my Thomas Gunn thriller series.  Reviewers of both The Orange Moon Affair and The Jonas Trust Deception have commented on what a great film series they would make, and compared them to the Jason Bourne films, to James Bond and other similar popular thrillers, while also commenting on their uniqueness, so I am definitely interested in pursuing having them produced.
Why do you think it’s important that people read books?
For me, reading was always a way of expanding my understanding of the world, myself and others and therefore expanding who I could be, what I could do, and what I could envisage.  It moved the boundaries of my universe and I think that’s still a major role of any work of fiction or non-fiction today. I think reading was on a downhill slope till the advent of digital books – now books are more accessible and a greater variety are available than ever before.  Reading has been reinvigorated, as has writing, and I think our society will be better for it.
What scares you the most?
Being unable to write anymore. Losing that ability would be like losing my life.
What makes you happiest?
Just about everything. Waking up in the morning is a big plus when you’ve had to be resuscitated in the past. I don’t ever want to take my life, my family, or my friends for granted –  and the smiles on the faces of my grandchildren when I tell a joke is an immeasurable joy.
If you could have dinner with anyone living or dead, who would that be and why?
Albert Einstein. He was brilliant, loved boats and was a creative thinker who wasn’t constrained by what was considered to be acceptable or thought to be true. I’d love to see the Universe through his eyes.
THE JONAS TRUST DECEPTION
The Jonas Trust Deception, another Thomas Gunn thriller by bestselling author AFN Clarke, follows The Orange Moon Affair, a “hard to put down”, “5-star novel by a 5-star author”. Thomas (ex-Special Forces) goes on high alert after a desperate message from his journalist friend, Morgan. She’s in danger. But where? And why? Rushing to her ranch he finds it being torn apart by a highly-trained female assassin of East European descent, with a mysterious butterfly tattoo on her neck. An image that sends his mind reeling. Dread seeping into his soul.
In her ongoing investigations, Morgan may have uncovered something even more explosive and far-reaching than the Orange Moon conspiracy.  If so, her enemies will want both her and her information destroyed. Racing to follow tangled leads, Thomas and his girlfriend Julie are thrust into the deadly path of Mexican drug cartels, corrupt politicians, unscrupulous financial brokers like Jonas T Purdue, the FBI, the UK intelligence services and their arch nemesis Marika Keskküla. What deception binds these unlikely “players” together? What’s their power struggle really about? And even more personally disturbing, why the constant links back to a secret mission in Afghanistan, that Thomas has tried so hard to forget?
Outraged by the feeling of constantly being “played”, Thomas decides to turn the tables on the faceless “puppeteers” by taking an action so bold, so dangerous, and so unexpected, that even his team fear he’s lost his mind. Has he? Or can he expose the “vermin” at the top and finally eliminate them forever?

Author Interview – Karen S. Bell @KarenSueBell

Image of Karen S. Bell

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going?

An inner urge to express myself and not worrying how to get money to eat.

What’s your next project?

I have a rough idea. My mission is to write books to get women thinking. WALKING WITH ELEPHANTS was about the struggles modern women have juggling work and family, SUNSPOTS, delves into the psychological dysfunction that occurs when a woman marries and loses her identity. This next project will be about female empowerment, the divine feminine. Society today seems to be moving backwards for women and some young women are also embracing social norms that are degrading, not becoming women to be admired. Celebrities as well. I believe we can be strong, independent without losing the grace of being nurturing, feminine, sexy, and classy role models. We certainly have many of those women but actions like a Miley Cyrus grab the attention with a very negative impact for the image of what it means to be female.

What’s the reason for your life? Have you figured out your reason for being here yet?

No, but I’m ecstatic in my cluelessness. It’s a gift to be alive and experiencing it all.

How do you feel about self-publishing?

It’s great and it stinks. So much crap out there now that it’s hard to grab an audience. And I do mean crap. Poorly written books that are just consumption. Easy reading, dystopias for the YA set, erotica for the sexually frustrated matron. Popular culture junk. But with self-publishing at least I can see my words in print, be master of my own fate, know that there are some people who have read my work and appreciate it. A writer needs to be read. Without self-publishing being so easy and cheap, my work would eventually just be fodder for the trash bin.

What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?

Albert Einstein, “There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle; you can live as if everything is a miracle.”

Sunspots

Sunspots follows the healing journey of a young woman thrown into the horror of losing a spouse. It is a love story of loss and redemption and the ghosts that haunt our lives and our houses. Skirting the genres of magical realism and romance, Sunspots, explores the existence of the afterlife and the paranormal. The story takes the reader on a path of high emotion as the narrator, Aurora, uncovers her husband Jake’s secret life and her own internal conflicts as she matures to self-awareness. The novel’s tone vacillates from irreverent humor to solemnity as Aurora relates her previous life with Jake and her present challenges. The title refers to the solar maximum which became the backdrop for Aurora’s conception when her hippy parents went to Canada to observe the Aurora Borealis. In name and in spirit, Aurora is connected to the observable and unobservable energy around us. With the help of friends, family, and the ghost of Viola Parker (her home’s original owner), Aurora accepts her fate and the secrets revealed about Jake’s true character. She realizes that in this life she will finally break the cycle of pain caused by her love for this man, Jake Stein, through the centuries.

Author Interview – Cerece Rennie Murphy @CereceRMurphy

http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/6a/9f/ab3dda5ba6070ad8976fda.L._SX80_.jpg

Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you?

Yes.  My friend Trice Hickman has been a constant source of encouragement and support.  I watched her journey from a self-published author to a traditionally published author.  It was hard work, but she pursued her dream until she got what she wanted.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel?

First and foremost, I want them to be entertained and engrossed.  I want them to feel like they are experiencing everything that that the characters are going through.  But, my deepest desire for the Order of the Seers trilogy is to have people feel inspired to look at themselves, their perception of their own potential and their world differently.  I want them to wonder after reading the books, what I am really capable of?

What’s your favorite meal?

It depends on my mood.  I’m always in the mood for sugar, so if you fed me a plate of cookies, I’d be happy.  I love Shrimp Marsala and Curried Chicken and Rice. Good Kibbeh with Tabouleh and a savory Chicken Enchilada.  If it’s good, I’ll eat it. J

What color represents your personality the most?

Purple. It’s intense, but warm.

What movie do you love to watch?

It depends on my mood.  If I’m really stressed, I used to love watching The Truth About Cats and Dogs. If I’m in the mood for action/sci-fi then I love Chronicles of Riddick.  If I want a new classic, then I’ll watch The Untouchables or The Matrix.  If I want an old classic then I’ll watch The Sound of Music.  I could go on and on… If I want to watch something quirky, but brilliant, I’ll watch Lars and the Real Girl. If I want to cry I’ll watch The Joy Luck Club or Finding Nemo.  I also have a list of movies I love and own that I will never be able to watch again because it’s just too painful.  They include, The Color Purple, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Hotel Rwanda, Slumdog Millionaire and Water.

Order of the Seers

What would you do if you held infinite power in the palm of your hand? Part One of the thrilling Order of the Seers trilogy poses this question within a story that fuses action, mystery, romance, and adventure in a science fiction novel that keeps you at the edge of your seat. Captured and enslaved for their extraordinary gift, a group of individuals, known as Seers, are forced to serve a ruthless world organization that uses the power of the Seers to exploit the ultimate advantage: knowing the future. While a brother and his Seer sister fight to evade the group that hunts them, an unlikely captured Seer, plots his escape from within the organization and sets off a chain of events that will change the world.

Author Interview – J.J. Ward @MI7Ward

Image of J.J. Ward

How do you think people perceive writers?

I believe everyone thinks they’re a writer or could be one. Writers must therefore be held in fairly high esteem.

What’s your next project?

It’s a toss-up. I’ll either write another MI7 novel and e-publish it, or a literary novel and send it to agents. I’ve got a firm plan for the latter, but on the whole, I think soliciting agents is always going to be a waste of time. Whether they like what I’ve – or you’ve – written will always be down to chance factors beyond the control of any writer. The chances of being picked up by one are always pretty negligible.

What’s the reason for your life? Have you figured out your reason for being here yet?

I think we’re all here for the same reason. To please God. However you might interpret that.

How do you feel about self-publishing?

I am a self-published author, so obviously I think it’s pretty ace. If someone was o give me enough money to start a publishing business tomorrow, I think there’s enough evidence on Amazon – rightly interpreted – to enable me to award deals to ten, twelve, twenty self-published authors and give the big boys a real run for their money.

Do you know your neighbours?

Yes. We get on well with both sides.

Tales of MI7

When someone starts assassinating paparazzi in three countries, MI7 sits up. Apparently, the killer is none other than Dmitri Vassyli Kramski, retired SVR field-operative and former Kremlin protégé. True, the Cold War is long finished, but everyone knows Vladimir Putin is as unhappy for Russia to play second fiddle on the international stage as even the most strident of his Communist predecessors. In 2010 therefore, East-West relations remain as tortuous as ever.

Kramski’s trail leads deep into London’s émigré community, forcing his pursuers into conflict with an unknown organisation bent on protecting him. Bit by bit, he begins to look less like a professional assassin and more like someone plotting to scupper the foundations of Western democracy itself. To compound matters, the Russians are as baffled by him as anyone.

Author Interview – Christina George @publicistgal

Why do some authors fail? Well there are a few reasons actually. One is that their ego gets in the way of their success. Meaning that they see this fame they want and assume it’s theirs just because they wrote a book. The second is that they don’t do enough or aren’t willing to put in the work needed to succeed. Though we love overnight success stories they rarely happen.
What do you hope your obituary will day about you? That Christina George started in publishing as a publicist and ended up being one of the best loved romance authors ever. Is that too pretentious? How about the best-loved author on Staten Island? Or New Jersey? Maybe I’ll start small :-) But I’d love to write full time – as any author would I’m sure.
What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing? Well publishing is easy now, thanks to self-publishing – and I always tell authors that writing is the easy part (though I know it does not feel easy when you’re in the midst of it). But for most authors, the marketing is really tough. That’s why I encourage them to reach out to someone who can help, maybe a fellow author or going to a writers conference or something. Don’t isolate yourself, that’s the worst. It’s hard to do it alone.
What marketing works for you? Reviews work very well as does engaging with readers. I love getting reader feedback
Do you plan to publish more books? Yes, I do — I really want to keep writing more about the publishing industry. It seems that the topic engages people, the behind-the-scenes stuff…
ShelfLife
Publishing: An industry of out-of-control of egos, unrealistic expectations, and books with the shelf life of milk. This is Kate’s world, but for how long? When one of Kate Mitchell’s star authors is carted away in handcuffs, she thinks it’s only the beginning of her troubles. As her world crumbles around her, Kate desperately looks for anyone to hold onto but finds that happy endings are truly works of fiction. When her career and love affair hit their expiration date, Kate sets off on a new adventure….
Starting over in California is easy, but Kate soon learns that leaving her old life behind isn’t. Nicholas Lavigne is eager to help her forget, but two things still own her heart, the dream of discovering the next great American novel, and MacDermott Ellis. As Kate tries to rebuild her life she finds a surprising gift that reboots her career in a new and unexpected direction. Suddenly her name becomes synonymous with one of the biggest bestsellers publishing has seen in ages and she’s welcomed back with open arms. At the height of her success the ghosts of her past come back to remind her of the world she’d been trying to forget and the man who never let go of her heart. Author Interview – Rob Manary @robmanary

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

There is a lot of subtext in “Icarus Rising” and much more in “Icarus Ascendant” I would hope that readers would grasp the symbolism below the surface, but I’m not going to spoil anyone’s enjoyment by blatantly spelling it out. I’d be much more interested in asking readers what they thought the message was, what allegories they found in reading, and what subversive elements they caught.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Buy all my books as they come out!!!  On a more serious note, I wrote this book from my heart and for the reader.  I hope the two have meshed well enough that this little book of mine will be well received and liked, perhaps even loved.  I fell in love with Brandon and Rachel as I typed away, fleshing them out, exploring them and learning about them.  I cried when I hurt them and I rejoiced when things went their way.

Rachel and Brandon came very much alive for me as their story unfolded and to the readers I say, I hope you’ll feel the same way.  I hope you will love them and clamour for more.

What are your goals as a writer?

The rumour is that traditional publishing is dead, but I would still like to see my book in a bookstore after I sign a multi-million dollar deal.

I would also like to go on a whirlwind world book tour, but that seems pretty unlikely as well. Maybe a whirlwind book tour of Western and Central Canada is a more realistic goal. Or a card table set up just outside my local bookstore with my name written prominently in magic marker on bristol board an even more attainable goal.

Do you have any advice for writers?

The only reason to write is because you love writing. If you don’t love writing you should probably stop. Writing is not easy, nor should it be easy, but if you love writing there is nothing more rewarding than writing that last word of the book, or the first word of a new book.

Or in the case of writing erotic romance I have found there is no greater joy than the rapture I feel when I find yet another way to say the word “penis”
I think if you are a writer you know what it feels like to read a sentence four or five times knowing there is something missing, then finding that perfect word, that word that perfectly captures the thought you were trying to express. That moment of revelation, finding that exact word, that is writing, that is the reward of writing.

You have to love writing. Any advice for writers? If you don’t love it… stop!

What do you think is the future of reading/writing?

The answer to this question frightens me.  I believe that writers will always write, a purging of the stories in our heads must be done; there is no other cure for this strange malaise we suffer from.  However, I fear that readers are already an endangered species.  I currently attend college after quite a long break.  When talking to my fellow classmates who are twenty years my junior, they claim to have no time to read, that they don’t want to make the time, or perhaps time will magically appear once they’re finished with school.

What does it say about a society where first independent bookstores and now even large corporate chain bookstores cannot keep their doors open?  The future of books and reading is quite worrisome to me.

icarusRisingPhotoCover_test

Rachel: A rock star. Her albums go multi-platinum overnight. She was sixteen when she had her first hit, more than ten years ago. She grew up under the scrutiny of the media. It is time for her to break out from under the shadow of her infamous Svengali ex-boyfriend/manager. She tires of the good girl image and wants to change, get dirtier, sexier. Enter Brandon.

Brandon: A playboy artist. His paintings demand almost unheard of prices at auction, but it’s his escapades away from the easel that garner the biggest headlines. He is a favorite of the tabloids and the paparazzi. A manipulator, he has used the publicity to drive up the prices of his work. If the tabloids are to be believed, he has slept his way through Hollywood’s A-list. The very definition of bad boy. He tires of the game.

Both incredibly damaged, can they heal each other or will they part lonelier and more broken than when they first came together?

This is a rock star erotic romance written by a man with a male point of view. This is how the guy is really thinking and feeling.

Icarus Rising is the first of a trilogy, but it stands as a novel by itself.

Author Interview – Diane Mulligan @Mulligan_writes

Image of Diane Vanaskie Mulligan

What genre are you most comfortable writing?

I’m most comfortable writing realistic, contemporary fiction, probably because of the old adage, “write what you know.” I’d love to write a historical novel or a ghost story, but I don’t have time to do research while also maintaining a full time job, and I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to craft a believable ghost story.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My students. I used to moderate a weekly writing club at the high school where I teach. Each week I’d write with the kids. They were so enthusiastic and creative, and I think their excitement infected me, too. My first novel WATCH ME DISAPPEAR is for teens. I wanted to write something my young writers would enjoy.

What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

Revision. Drafting is easy and fun, but taking that raw material and shaping it into a meaningful, organized finished product takes a lot of time, effort, and insight, and the ability to self-reflect. I can draft all day, but revision takes discipline.

What is your greatest strength as a writer?

I think my greatest strength as a writer is my ability to sympathize with people, even people whom I disagree with or who do things I would never do. I’m really interested in what makes people tick, and fiction allows me to explore that. In THE LATECOMERS FAN CLUB, I wrote from the point of view of Nathaniel, who is a total jerk, but it was so fun to peek inside his head and even though he’s despicable, I had a lot of compassion for him.

How did you come up with the title of your latest work?

I went through dozens of titles before settling on THE LATECOMERS FAN CLUB. Way back in the beginning, the title was WORK OF ART (IN PROGRESS), which was a play on the fact that one of the main characters, Maggie, is an aspiring artist. That title, however, became increasingly irrelevant with each draft as I added more characters and focused less on the artistic side of Maggie and more on her daily life. As I finished the last draft, I had a piece of scrap paper with words, phrases, and themes on it. I kept it by my bedside and just kept adding to it, but none of the items on the list had the right ring or pizazz. The only idea I had was THE LATECOMERS, which was both the name of one of the main character’s band and an apt phrase to describe all the main characters, who are a little late in growing up. When I googled that name, however, I discovered dozens of books with that title, most of them bodice-ripping romance tales. I thought I might have to scrap the entire latecomer idea, but then, as I was trying to find a title that would bind all three point of view characters together, the phrase “fan club” occurred to me, and voila! I had a title.

The Latecomers Fan Club

What is it about guys with guitars in their hands that makes them so irresistible, even when they are obviously self-centered jerks? If Abby and Maggie could answer that question, maybe they could finally get over Nathaniel. There’s just something about him when he picks up his guitar and gets behind the microphone, something that makes sensible women act like teenyboppers instead of rational, self-respecting adults.

Abby was first sucked in by Nathaniel’s rock ‘n roll swagger four years ago when a drunken fling turned into a series of drunken hook-ups that became something like a relationship. Now, as New Year’s Eve promises a fresh start, she wants to believe he’s finally going to grow up and take their relationship seriously.

What does Nathaniel hope the New Year will bring? An escape from the disappointing realities of his life. He’s thirty-four years old and he’s barely making ends meet as an adjunct philosophy professor, which was always only a backup plan anyway. Nathaniel’s real goal was always to make his living as a musician, but his band, The Latecomers, broke up a couple of years ago, and he hasn’t picked up his guitar in months.

When he decides to spend the holiday with some high school friends instead of hanging out at the bar where Abby works, he gets the happy surprise of reuniting with his long-lost friend Maggie. Newly divorced, Maggie has just moved back to her mother’s house to regroup. Nathaniel and Maggie were supposed to be the ones who left Worcester forever to conquer the world. He was going to be a rock star. She was going to take the world of art by storm. He’s never gotten farther than Boston, and her best efforts only left her broke and heartbroken.

As they ring in the New Year together, Nathaniel decides it’s time to take control of his life and to start making his dreams come true. He thinks the first step will be easy. All he needs to do is break up with Abby and finally admit his feelings for Maggie. But the New Year has more surprises in store, and nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
